Update and New Legislation
Sapowet cove and waters at low tide now protected by law.
Dear Save Seapowet Supporters,
As of March 17, 2025, the CRMC Hearing Officer has not issued a decision on the Motion to Dismiss the application for a commercial oyster farm in Sapowet Cove. The Objector's dismissal motion was filed in July 2024.
The Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) is obligated to follow RI State Law 32.1.54, which prohibits commercial activity in Sapowet Cove. This law was proposed in 2024 by Representative John Edwards and Senator Lou DiPalma. With support from you, the law was enacted on June 29, 2024.
Now, please support Representative Edwards’ new legislation. On February 12, 2025, Representative Edwards, recognizing the need for CRMC reform, introduced Bill H. 5453.
This legislation would:
Make the CRMC a division of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM), a state agency that is better resourced to oversee critical coastal and environmental issues.
Eliminate the politically appointed volunteer CRMC Council.
Transfer final authority on agency decisions from politically appointed volunteers to RIDEM’s Director, ensuring professional oversight and clear accountability.
Reduce conflict of interest and potential bias by allowing RIDEM's Director to separate aquaculture promotion from aquaculture permitting
Fix procedural flaws and delays
Please provide your public comments to the House Committee on State Government & Elections, to support Representative Edwards’ solution to reform the CRMC.
